Schools on Stage

Peter Pan - The British Musical

Assumption Catholic Primary School - Mandurah, W.A.

Zombie Prom - Grant High School (SA)

Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre September 24 – 26, 2009 Grant High School has a well-deserved reputation for producing high quality musicals, and rock musical Zombie Prom, the school’s 27th offering since 1976, was no exception.

Rockin Robin - James Nash High School Gympie Qld

Writer Judith Prior comments on the production. From the moment the curtains opened, Robin really Rocked! The up tempo rendition of the opening number Horror Movie set the pace as the enthusiasm and energy of the cast exploded over the edge of the stage and swept us all into the fantasy story. The High School Rock Eisteddfod team were accidentally swept back in time to medieval Sherwood Forest where Robin and Little John welcomed them with a "Thank God you're here!" and so it began.

Disney’s Aladdin Jr - St Columba College - Andrew Farms, SA.

A cast of 180 St Columba students took to the stage in this year’s musical presentation, Disney’s Aladdin Jr. In doing so they provided great entertainment to peers and parents. Performing for such a large and appreciative audience was clearly uplifting for them.

The Pirate Queen - Belgrave Heights Christian School Vic.

We found The Pirate Queen from Maverick Musicals a great first musical to tackle, as it had lots of fun roles, lots of parts that boys wanted to do (we had a bunch of year 7's take over the leprechaun roles; they were just rapt to be in it) simple costumes and staging and audiences wanted to see it - we had great houses that exceeded expectations. Everybody loves a pirate show – arrrhhh!! We also got great support from Maverick Musicals. Darryl Thompson - Head of Performing Arts

Little Stars - Te Awamutu Intermediate School NZ

Little Stars was a highly successful show. It is extremely topical and an ideal opportunity to use your school's talents in so many ways. It has catchy music, lots of humour, strong characters, and for us, we were able to use our school band to play the music. Our parents absolutely loved it. To quote a parent: "The kids looked like they were having so much fun!" How good is that? I strongly recommend Little Stars, it was one of our best if not the best show Te Awamutu Intermediate has done - ever. Jill Shaw, Director.

Smithy! - Matamata College, New Zealand

I have directed Smithy! three times and it never fails. It is very easy to stage with a simple set and costumes and it contains plenty of good meaty roles that students are able to perform with conviction. The show has always attracted very good houses – the audience loves the humour and the catchy music and the show builds brilliantly towards the climactic balcony and fire scene. This year we probably could have run more performances, such was the demand for tickets.

Disco Inferno - Launceston College - June 2009

This school has a dynamic drama teacher who stages amongst the largest school musicals anywhere in the country. Her name is Elizabeth Bennett - and yes she has a sister called Jane Bennett - and a mother who loves a particularly famous English writer. Each year Elizabeth virtually moves into the school to stage an enormous production with a cast of about 100 inside the magnificent 1000 seat Launceston Princess Theatre. It runs for more than week and takes more at the box office than most community theatre companies.

The Wiz - King’s School Production, Remuera, New Zealand

After 12 weeks of lively rehearsals, 50 boys from ages 9 to 13 prepared to take the King’s School community by storm with their extravagant production of The Wiz, with five sell-out performances in July. The Wiz is based on the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum’s classic novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision - Toorak College, Victoria

Toorak College is an independent school in Mt Eliza, Victoria. Each year the school runs several productions including the major College Production (a musical or play) which involves girls from Years 9-12.
