Zombie Prom - Grant High School (SA)
Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre
September 24 – 26, 2009
Grant High School has a well-deserved reputation for producing high quality musicals, and rock musical Zombie Prom, the school’s 27th offering since 1976, was no exception.
Zombie Prom is a 1950’s horror comic brought to life, and the production reflected this fact extremely well. Bright colours were used for the scenery and costume, and the comic book element was carried over into the programme, where clever use of photo editing software turned photographs into a comic strip. Mike Bakker’s direction made full use of melodrama and comedy, enhanced by thoughtful and innovative choreography by Ann Tannebring. The total involvement of all the cast (chorus as well as leads) and the high quality of the ensemble work are features of Grant High School’s productions, and were essential if this show was to be a success. The chorus was very good, showing their own individual characters and reacting well to the actions of the main characters, and their dancing was energetic and well synchronised.
Zombie Prom was a fantastic show of a very high quality: all areas of the production were close to professional standard, and the tumultuous applause that greeted the end of each show was richly deserved. All those involved should be congratulated on a wonderful achievement.
