Arts Educators Warn of Collapse

Arts educators have warned the industry needs urgent new funding, or risks facing collapse from the twin pressures of COVID-19 and funding cuts.

The warning follows the announcement on April 3 that dozens of arts organisations have missed out on four-year funding from the Australia Council.

The National Advocates for Arts Education (NAAE) is calling for a significant increase of the Australia Council’s budget as part of a larger set of stimulus measures.

Malthouse Theatre Announces Temporary Closure

As of close of business on Monday 16 March, Malthouse Theatre will be temporarily closed to the public until Sunday 12 April. This decision has been made following the advice of State Government health authorities to cease public gatherings of more than 500 people. While our individual theatres hold fewer than 500 people respectively, we have made the decision to close as a precautionary measure to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Theatre is my greatest love. It is the space that has most inspired me, challenged me, changed me and motivated me. Across the country, my greatest love is hurting badly. The COVID-19 pandemic is already wreaking havoc with closures, postponements and cancellations of so many events and theatre productions across Australia and around the world. My personal gripe about all of this isn’t worth even mentioning because this needs to run its course.
