Tony Awards 2019
The musical Hadestown has scooped eight Tony awards - whilst the Aussies who were nominated have missed out.
The modestly budgeted musical intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.
Rolling Stone magazine described the production's unlikely path to Broadway. "It began as an indie folk opera, performed to small crowds in Vermont theater spaces, (which became) a full-on Great White Way show."
"The show’s book — written by Anaïs Mitchell who also wrote all the words and music — has remained more or less the same since it debuted in 2006"
Mitchell was awarded Best original score over Australian writer Eddie Perfect who was up for Beetlejuice.
Three other Australians (all called Peter) were nominated for King Kong.
Peter England was up for Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Peter Mumford for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Peter Hylenski for Best Sound Design in a Musical.
Earlier Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company were given a special Tony Award for King Kong.
