Man of Steel

Man of Steel uses an icon that, even in this day, is recognised by every student, parent and teacher. It’s a simple story and it worked for the new-entrants in our matinees, as much as for the 80-year-olds in the evening shows. It lends itself to simple props and costumes, and the action carries the show.

The original script is easy to ‘update’ for local use and the actors enjoyed doing this themselves.

Canberra Theatre kicks off first behind-the-scenes VET training program

Canberra Theatre Centre is proud to host three year 12 students who will be taking part in the Theatre’s first on-site VET training course from today (Feb 11, 2014).

Students Larissa Caston, Alex Parker and Alex Pilicic from St Francis Xavier College will work behind the scenes with the theatre’s technical staff across the next two school terms, gaining valuable hands-on skills that will be credited directly towards their Certificate 2 in Entertainment.

Annie is the perfect paean to optimism and we are thankful to Jane Polley and her creative team for this marvellous production of a much-loved musical.

Lilydale High School

August 29th – 31st 2013

Lilydale High School has a range of possibilities for students to be involved in performance. Several of the lead performers in this production are studying drama, have been in other school musicals or have been involved in community youth theatre and it shows. They addressed the challenges of performance with confidence and using their strengths in characterisation and timing created a vibrant, entertaining show. They all deserve congratulations.

Can Expanded Wakakirri fill the gap left by Rock Eisteddfod?

Wakakirri, formerly a primary school only event, is now offering itself as the logical replacement for Rock Eisteddfod as Australia's largest annual performing arts event for secondary schools.

With the Rock Eisteddfod cancelling all shows due to dwindling participation rates and subsequent funding constraints, Wakakirri aims to fill its impressive dance shoes. For the first time, in 2013 Wakakirri will invite all secondary school students to participate, having previously been open only to primary school-aged students.

2013 Victorian State Schools Spectacular

The 2013 Victorian State Schools Spectacular – There’s No Place Like Home, is a huge concert-style extravaganza of high-energy dance routines, vocals and circus tricks featuring Victoria’s most talented young performers, in two shows only, Saturday 27 July, 11am and 5pm at Hisense Arena.

A cast of over 3000 from more than 300 State Schools from across Victoria will take part in this three-hour Spectacular.

Hart Theatre Company Wins Major Guild Awards

The Hart Theatre Company, auspiced by St Leonard’s College in Brighton East, Melbourne, won two of the major awards in the Junior Category of the 2012 Musical Theatre Guild Awards. The prestigious award ceremony at Costa Hall is Victoria’s equivalent of the Tony Awards.

The theatre production of Barnum was performed under a Big Top in the grounds of St Leonard’s College in August. Students performed a number from the show and then accepted awards for Best Junior Musical and Best Direction.
