Hugh Jackman Broadway Bound Again

Hugh Jackman will be on Broadway from October 25 in a one man show, Back on Broadway, singing music theatre songs, backed by an 18-piece orchestra.

The show, to play at the Broadhurst Theatre, will have its opening night on November 10, and play until January 1.

The show is described as “a personal selection” Jackman’s favorite musical numbers that reflect on his life and career.

It is the same show which played sold out runs in San Francisco and Toronto.

As Ensemble Theatre enters its 54th year, Co-Artistic Directors Sandra Bates and Mark Kilmurry today September 12, 2011) announced the 2012 season of 11 plays.

Notable features are two David Williamson plays, one an Australian premiere, the other a Sydney premiere.

2012 Season at Belvoir

Artistic Director Ralph Myers announced the 2012 Belvoir season on Friday September 9.

“I’m enormously pleased that audiences have responded so enthusiastically to the 2011 season,” said Myers. “So in 2012 we have kept the recipe intact: a mix of exciting plays by local playwrights and classic plays re-imagined by the best and most original directors we could find.”

The Butterfly Club Spreads Its Cabaret Wings

The Butterfly Club is spreading its wings for a special cabaret season at Trades Hall from Tuesday 20 September until Saturday 8 October 2011.

Butterfly @ Trades willpresent some of the best local cabaret artists with new shows and many returning from sold out seasons across Australia.  More than 40 performers in 45 shows across the three weeks.

Earth Angel: Combining Circus and Dance

Earth Angel, a mystical physical theatre production combining dance, aerial circus and live song, will be presented as part of the 2011 Sydney Fringe.

It depicts an epic battle of Light versus Dark, following the journey of an Angel (Tara played by Natasha Marconi) who is sent to Earth in a quest to save the planet against the Dark Lights. In her journey she falls in love with a human, Christopher (played by Chris Tsattalios).

Opera Broadcast Partnership Bewteen ABC TV and Opera Australia

ABC TV and Opera Australia have forged a new partnership to benefit all lovers of opera. Over the next three years, 15 of the most recent and popular operas will be broadcast on ABC1 and ABC2.

“This great partnership deepens ABC TV’s ongoing commitment to the delivery of the very finest in Arts programming,” said Kim Dalton ABC Director of Television. “Opera Australia and ABC TV have worked very hard to make sure that all Australians have the opportunity to enjoy the work of one of the premier performing arts organisations in Australia.”

John and Jen for Sydney Fringe

As part of the Sydney Fringe Festival recent WAAPA graduates Edward Grey and Naomi Livingston will appear in John and Jen, a two-hander musical composed by Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family) and Tom Greenwald, playing just six showsat Sidetrack Theatre, Marrickville from 20 – 24 September.

John and Jen follows the story of a woman torn between the two Johns in her life – the brother that died in the Vietnam War, and the son she is struggling to bring up.
