NIDA’s 2025 Festival of Emerging Artists

Master of Fine Arts Directors Present Seven Free Short Productions from April 2 - 5.

In the ever-evolving world of theatre, the Festival of Emerging Artists shines brightly as a beacon for creativity and innovation.

Held from April 2-5, this festival offers audiences a showcasie of the significant projects of the soon-to-be-graduating directors from NIDA's Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Directing course. These immersive, 40-minute stage productions invite the public to witness the culmination of years of rigorous training and exploration, all free of charge.

The significance of this festival extends far beyond mere performance. It symbolises a rite of passage for seven aspiring directors, providing them a platform to connect with live audiences and share their unique visions and skills.

Dr. Benjamin Schostakowski, Head of Directing and Course Leader, expressed, "These productions stand as a testament to the ambitious creative artists moving into a radically evolving Arts climate. We’re thrilled to welcome you to the festival."

NIDA has a rich history of nurturing talents who go on to make their mark on the global stage. Notable alumni like Kip Williams, former STC Artistic Director and NIDA graduate, have demonstrated the heights an artist can reach, with works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, gracing Broadway after conquering London's West End. Another exemplary figure is Hayden Tonazzi, who now helms the Australian Theatre for Young People as CEO and Artistic Director after graduating from the Directing course.

The festival does not merely celebrate the past successes of NIDA alumni but acts as a launchpad for the current cohort. Carissa Liciardello, a directing mentor and NIDA alumna herself, remarked on the vibrancy and potential she’s witnessed. "It’s been invigorating to return to NIDA and re-encounter the vibrant creative energy behind this Festival. This is where students on the cusp of their professional careers are empowered to create the kind of work most aligned with their own artistic identity."

Each production reflects a distinct artistic sensibility. It’s an exciting introduction to the next generation of Australian theatre artists, a diverse ensemble ready to contribute to the arts in a rapidly changing climate. Attendees have assured an experience that entertains and exemplifies the innovative directions contemporary Australian theatre is heading towards.

In essence, the Festival of Emerging Artists is more than a showcase; it is a celebration, an invitation, and an inspiration. It serves as a reminder of the timeless power of theatre to reflect and shape our world through the fresh voices and ideas of new talents eager to leave their mark. As audiences step into this arena of creativity, they aren’t just spectators—they become part of a continuing legacy of storytelling and artistic excellence.

The Festival of Emerging Artists plays at NIDA from April 2 to April 5.
