Tony Awards 2024
The Outsiders has taken out the Tony Award for Best Musical pipping SUFFS which took out Best Score and Best Book.
The result came despite The Outsiders receiving lukewarm reviews, described by The New York Times as a compelling if imperfect musical and The Guardian as competent but forgettable.
Suffs (about the women's suffragettes movement) produced by (amongst others) Hillary Clinton also received lukewarm reviews described by The New York Times as "insufficient. Its scenes often come off as educational skits."
Best Play was Stereophonic. The play follows an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album on the cusp of superstardom.
The late Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along took out four Tonys including Best revival of a Musical and Best Actor for Daniel Radcliffe. The musical which was a flop when it opened is now a Tony Award winner.
