Sun Music Story on Stage

Sun Music Story on Stage

Sons of Sun – The Sam Phillips Story is a wild rock‘n’roll play about Sun Records, Memphis, and the artists that started their careers there. After its premiere run at the Sydney Fringe in 2012 and standing ovations in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year, the play returns to the stages of Sydney with a residency at the Bridge Hotel, Rozelle from August to November and a return to Lizotte’s, Dee Why.

Told through the character of its founder Sam Phillips, his assistant Marion Keisker, and the famous musicians that Sam recorded, the show features a three piece live band fronted by John Kennedy, performing thirty- one songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many more. The pugnacious Sam Phillips is played by prolific Sydney actor, Matt Charleston, with co-stars Corinne Marie and Damian Sommerlad taking on multiple roles from Sam’s assistant Marion Keisker to Howlin’ Wolf.

Sydney musician John Kennedy (Love Gone Wrong) began developing the Sons of Sun idea in 2011 with the release of his Sons of Sun Vol 1 CD. Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll (The Giraffe’s Uncle, 3XY OR I DIE!) has written an accompanying script to Kennedy’s renditions. Director Neil Gooding (Breast Wishes, Holding The Man, Gutenberg the Musical) blends the narratives and songs into rock’n’roll theatre.
