Satre's No Exit for Sydney
As the three characters try to determine why they are in Hell and how they are to be tormented, confessing their crimes and determining their combined fate, they soon come to the conclusion that Hell is other people.
Although many nineteenth century philosophers developed the concepts of existentialism, it was the French writer Jean Paul Sartre who popularized it and No Exit, first produced in Paris in May, 1944 and hailed as "a phenomenon of the modern theatre", is a clear allegory for his philosophy. There is no other modern play that offers such a haunting metaphor for humankind's existential dilemma.
No Exit dissects the idiosyncrasies of human behaviour and projects the results into a uniquely bleak and absurd version of Hell. Director Andrew Langcake says "I’m interested in plays with a dark and droll aesthetic that examine the some of the more sinister implications of humanity and society. Sartre’s No Exit is a great example of a script that combines humour and despair in equal measure to explore the darker corners of human nature, and I’m very lucky to be working with such gifted actors to bring Sartre’s vision of Hell to the stage."
Starring Harley Connor (Corpus Christi, Metamorphosis), Darcie Irwin-Simpson (Punk Rock, Metamorphosis), Courtney Powell (Legally Blonde, Disco Pigs) and Jeff Hampson (Annie, Disco Pigs).
