La Traviata for State Opera South Australia
State Opera South Australia’s new production of La Traviata will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre on August 25.
One of the most passionate and tragic love stories of all time, Verdi’s opera is a crowd favourite and loved by audiences everywhere.
On stage will be exciting Australian opera talent including Soprano Lauren Fagan as Violetta and Kang Wang as her lover Alfredo. Fagan is considered one of the most sensational voices to have emerged in recent years and makes her Australian Operatic debut in this production, having performed it internationally with critical acclaim for her richness of tone, thrilling top notes and compelling stage presence.
“To perform opera for the first time in my home country is incredibly special. To do it performing Violetta is a dream come true.
“Verdi’s writing is vocally and emotionally all-encompassing and requires a commitment and journey unlike any other role I’ve performed to date. Although Violetta is an absolute pleasure to perform, it is definitely not for the faint-hearted. No matter how many times I perform her, I have to admit I always get a little nervous – it is an epic role,” she said.

Fagan will be joined on stage by rising star Australian-Chinese tenor Kang Wang who has already received rave reviews from his performance in the same role in Queensland. He makes his State Opera debut, as does Baritone James Roser as Germont.
"It's always a pleasure to sing Verdi roles, but especially Alfredo. I'm drawn to the tragedy of Violetta and her doomed relationship. One can never be tired of the sublime music that Verdi composed,” Wang said.

They are joined by a local cast including Pelham Andrews, Jeremy Tatchell, Mark Oates, James Scott, Cherie Boogaart and Teresa La Rocca, as well as the State Opera Ensemble and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Oliver von Dohnanyi.
This new production, created with Opera Queensland and West Australian Opera, is directed by director Sarah Giles and features designs by Charles Davis.
Stuart Maunder, Artistic Director of State Opera South Australia said that Sarah has created something very special for Adelaide audiences.
“La Traviata is one of the greats and Sarah has created a visually stunning, moving and unforgettable production,” he said.
