Home Appliances Make Way for New Brisbane Theatre
The former Gordon Walters Retravision store on Wynnum Road in Morningside (Qld) has been transformed into a dedicated live theatre by Queensland based entertainment company Starbuck Productions.
Producer Damien Lee who is behind this new venue in Morningside said, “The Studio Theatre & Café will be a boutique style venue that will showcase a wide diversity of entertainment options.
“Not only will we be presenting great comedy musicals, but also Classic Cinema screenings, shows specifically designed for children during the daytime and special one off events. We want it to become part of the fabric of the community and as such it will also be a great place for local groups to meet up.”
“We are going to be a very intimate theatre space, and our aim is to be a cost effective entertainment facility where locals can have a great night out at a fraction of the cost of CBD venues.”
Starbuck has produced live entertainment in venues such as the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, SouthBank Piazza, Twelfth Night Theatre, Theatre Royal Hobart as well as regional touring venues throughout south east Queensland.
Their stable of shows includes Brisbane seasons of Mickey Rooney, Rhonda Burchmore, Little Shop of Horrors, Gilligan’s Island The Musical & Midlife The Crisis Musical.
The first production for the new Studio Theatre and Café will be Cut & Died! The Blow and Go Musical - a musical spoof filled with hit songs, bad hair jokes, and some murder mystery.
Cut and Died wraps up stories and situations real life stylists have faced – offering a funny look behind the scenes of the suburban hairdresser. Audiences will be welcomed into “Shear Perfection” where the staff are crazy, the clients are whacky, and the last thing on anyone’s mind is styling the perfect murder!
The comedy musical, described as Murder She Wrote meets Hairspray, was researched through interviews with working hairdressers in Queensland.
