Broadway Staying Closed Till June
UPDATE: It has now been announced that Broadway will not re-open until September.
The Broadway Producer's League has announced that "in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and under the continued direction of Governor Andrew Cuomo, Broadway shows in New York City will extend the current suspension of all performances through June 7, 2020."
“Our top priority continues to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatregoers and the thousands of people who work in the theatre industry every day, including actors, musicians, stagehands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals.” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League.
“Broadway will always be at the very heart of the Big Apple, and we join with artists, theatre professionals, and fans in looking forward to the time when we can once again experience live theatre together.”
This means that Beetlejuice - with music and lyrics by Australia's own Eddie Perfect - has now closed. The company released a statement overnight.
"Hey, you guys! The Broadway League announced today that shows are suspended through June 7, which means we have to say goodbye to the Winter Garden Theatre. Thank you - yes, YOU - for helping make our time there so unforgettable"
However the suggested re-opening in June appears optimistic. Andrew Lloyd Webber has told Page Six.
“The industry says theaters reopen June 7. My opinion? Optimistic. Ridiculous. I think this peaks in June, and theaters remain closed until end of September.
