Avenue Q

Avenue Q

Melbourne based theatre company AG Theatre Productions is kicking off its 2025 season from February 22nd with the laugh-out-loud Broadway hit Avenue Q. The irreverent R rated musical theatre show tackles all kinds of taboo issues including racism, unemployment, homosexuality, love, and porn with its raucous Sesame Street-like puppets. This ‘anti-musical’ tells the story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Avenue Q garnered the coveted ‘triple crown’ at Tony Awards in 2004 winning Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical, toppling the mega-production Wicked.

This funny and irreverent show conveys life’s tough lessons through the trials and tribulations of

Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, who is anxious to discover his purpose in life; but first, he must find an apartment and a job, with no work experience - just like the other characters living on Avenue Q!

Director, Pip Mushin says, "Since its Broadway premier two decades ago, Avenue Q has solidified its place as a timeless classic. For first-time audiences, they are in for one hell of a treat! For those revisiting the show, this production is packed with enough fresh elements and unexpected delights that not only keep it alive and vibrant but will deliver the same exhilarating thrill as the very first time they saw it.”

Avenue Q will play at The National Theatre in St Kilda from Wednesday to Sunday until March 8.
