Australian Premiere for Musical Calvin Berger
Director Casey Gould and Musical Director Loclan Mackenzie-Spencer, present the Australian Premiere of Calvin Berger - A Musical by Barry Wyner in Melbourne at Southbank Theatre, The Lawler, from September 10 – 13, 2014.

Writer Barry Wyner gives the tale of Cyrano de Bergerac a modern, musical-comedy retelling. Set in contemporary America, the four teenage characters struggle with their insecurities as they make their way through the never-ending Judgement Day that is high school.
Director, Casey Gould and Musical Director, Loclan Mackenzie-Spencer have been working together for the past five years, most recently on Nailed It!, a cabaret of original songs, at the Butterfly Club. With Calvin Berger they look forward to introducing a new musical and writer to Australian audiences with a cast of young, up and coming musical talent.
"Calvin Berger has a great score, a lot of heart and is a highly humorous tale of unrequited love,” says director Casey Gould. “I think everybody can relate to slightly obsessing over someone who has no interest in you whatsoever, especially during high school! I'd say it's a show for anybody who has ever had an awkward moment with another human being.
"Loclan (Musical Director) and I are interested in making new work (he and Casey just finished working together on a one hour cabaret of all new material,Nailed It! at The Butterfly Club) but also in putting on great, little shows, Off-Broadway type shows, that Australian audiences wouldn't usually get a chance to experience. Calvin Berger is by a new writer and has never been seen in Australia, so we're pretty excited to put it in front of a Melbourne audience.
"We have four truly talented, up-and-coming musical theatre performers in this production. All of them are names to watch. The first time we had the four of them in the room together and they sang it through, I just sat there thinking ‘Wow, this is going to be awesome!’"
Calvin Berger – The Musical is the winner of the Jerry Bock Award, Richard Rodgers Award, Kleban Prize and Noel Coward Prize.
