Anthony Warlow Headlines Opera in the Alps
Anthony Warlow, alongside conductor Guy Noble, will take centre-stage in Beechworth on January 18 to lead the ensemble of singers and instrumentalists at the 18th year of the ‘Opera in the Alps’ event, transforming Beechworth’s historic Baarmutha Park along Broadway-proportions.
Featuring performances from soprano Julie Lea Goodwin and a chorus ensemble from Melbourne’s Opera Scholars Australia – a program dedicated to nurturing emerging classical singers – Opera in the Alps marks Anthony Warlow’s debut performance at Beechworth after a year long run on Broadway in the 35th Anniversary production of "Annie”, directed by James Lapine.
Anticipating a sell-out event, Anthony Warlow said he was very excited to lead an ensemble of exciting young talent for this annual event.
“Opera in the Alps gives families from all over the countryside the chance to dip their toes into an exciting classical performance while showcasing some of the best young talent the country has ever seen.
“Performers can spend entire careers under stage lights, but to be able to perform in a beautiful outdoor environment is just breath-taking.
“I look forward to performing under the stars, alongside Julie Lea Goodwin at this wonderful annual event,” Mr Warlow said.
Event organisers and former international opera performers, Graeme Wall and Margot Cory-Wall said the event had grown exponentially since its inception in 1995.
“When we first launched Opera in the Alps nearly 20 years ago we performed with 85 singers and garnered an audience of 150; now we’re playing host to an average audience of between 3-4,000 guests who cram the parklands each summer to see national and international artists perform.
“Opera in the Alps aims to celebrate beautiful music in beautiful places so this year we are incredibly honoured to present Anthony Warlow in what will be his first one off concert in eight years.
“Furthermore, our young singers from Opera Scholars Australia will benefit directly from the leadership and expertise shown by our star performers – with three Scholar finalists performing arias as they compete for the acclaimed Opera Scholar of the Year award.
“These Scholars are the cream of the crop, and we’re sure that our audience will be thrilled to get a sneak-peek at the burgeoning careers of singers destined to step up to the same calibre as internationally acclaimed performers,” Mr Wall said.
Offering a range of exclusive dining and performance packages for the evening, as well as a wide variety of gourmet food and wine vendors on the night, tickets start from $75 with group discounts available.
Opera in the Alps 2014 is to be held at Baarmutha Park, Balaclava Road, Beechworth on Saturday, 18th January with gates opening from 5:30pm and the performance starting at 8pm.
