Les Misérables - School Edition

Perth College’s Les Misérables - School Edition is an epic production, with around 85 on-stage performers, a large orchestra, with excellent sets and costumes, which is performed with polish, precision and passion.

Known for its strong annual production, Les Misérables is their biggest show to date, with production values (and presumably budget) that many theatre companies would envy. The multi-level set, constructed by Matthew Brown and Ian Tregonning, is well employed by director Tyler Jones, with performers in windows and on balconies filling the space well. Javert’s final scene - expertly performed by Charles Sherrington (with fabulous emotion) - was technically superb and one of the best executions of this scene I have seen, thanks to brilliant work from the director, technical designer Matthew Brown, and sound operator Ryan Sedgewick.

An orchestra of students, supported by community members and music staff provides excellent accompaniment to strong vocal performances throughout under the guidance of musical director Jane Artelaris. Student involvement extends to stage management and crew, as well as lighting operation.

Male guest performers from schools throughout Perth complement the Perth College students. Noah Connelly is a very strong Jean Valjean who brings a great voice and emotional maturity to the central role. Klara Kuhn beautifully captures and understands the role of Fantine. Lia Shilo is an excellent Eponine - with outstanding emotion, while Zachary McLean is genuine as Marius, working beautifully opposite Matilda Wilson a sweet and vocally impressive Cosette.

David Bell believably rouses the crowd as passionate Enjolras, Ashton Birks and Hannah McCarthy quickly become audience favourites - finding both comedy and depth in the Thénardiers. Baia Spodniewska is strong and loveable as Gavroche, while Phoebe Bowler wins hearts as the little Cosette.

The numerous smaller roles are, without exception, played with energy, dedication, and professionalism, supported by a strong dance chorus (who wear some of the most stunning of Krystal Meek’s costumes) and a huge chorus.

This show deservedly is being well received beyond the Perth College Community. An excellent production that is a credit to all involved.
