Finding Nemo Jr.

Finding Nemo Jr.

Book, Music and Lyrics by Kristen Anderson–Lopez and Robert Lopez.  Book adapted by Lindsay Anderson.  Music/orchestrations adapted and arranged by Myrna Conn. Producer and Director Madeleine Johns for Roar Academy at Theatre 102, Redcliffe. May 18 & 19, 2024

This daring venture over four performances was the end product for a young cast learning the art of theatre and performance. Not only was there acting to master but a full range of singing and some dancing.  To make it even more difficult, the audience all knew the original Disney/Pixar film on which this show is based. It was amazing the skill displayed by so many in a young cast with such an age range. The musical flowed quite well and there were no delays with the very many ons and offs and the multitude of costume changes.

Director Madeleine Johns continues to display a talent of working with the young, who obviously followed her instructions well. Not all the cast was on top of the game but the audience allowed for that to be able to see the stars of the future. More work needs to be done on vocal production rather than assuming the face mikes will do the trick every time. Certainly some of the leads were outstanding and Daisy Wilson as Nemo was very good – she really became that core of the show.  The most outstanding in the leading roles was Rory Argles as Dory. Her performance dominated every scene she was in and that helped lift the whole show. Oh, Toby Bailey as Marlin was essential in finding Nemo by the end of a complex search. Several of the slightly older performers were also vital for the good night out.

This was not a perfect night at the theatre – nor was it expected to be – but it was enjoyable to view the potential for the future. On top of that, the cast obviously enjoyed the night as did most of the audience. Well done and it looks like a good future ahead.
