Big – The Musical
Kingswood College (Victoria).
Big – The Musical is about the desire to grow up quickly and the importance of enjoying your childhood. It is based on the 1988 film starring Tom Hanks. Kingswood College Box Hill students responded positively to the playful nature of the show. Props like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Silly String and Care Bears give the show a delightfully 80’s feel. The Musical Director adapted the score to suit a small contemporary band but still provide a ‘big’ sound.
One of the most challenging aspects of the school production is the final rehearsal week. Tickets sales are steaming along and all of a sudden you realise that the empty performance space will soon be filled with … an audience. The cast of Big – The Musical faced that hurdle with energy and a sense of fun. This involved adjusting choreography too, so that actors could dance on a gigantic keyboard and the backstage crew carefully placing props to ensure the MacMillan Toy Company looked colourful and inviting.
With a huge commitment from staff across a number of faculties and students working on and off stage, Big – The Musical certainly lives up to its name. For the audience it is a bright and witty show which appeals to the child in everyone.
