The Addams Family

John Curtin College of the Arts

By Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice and Andrew Lippa. Directed by Stephen Carr. The Ellen Street Theatre, John Curtin College of the Arts, Fremantle, WA. Mar 26 - Mar 29, 2025

John Curtin College of the Arts Year 10, 11 and 12 Music Theatre Students presented The Addams Family in a joyous, well produced production. A large cast production, many of the roles, especially those played by female students, were doubled, with this review being focused on Cast B.

This production has a complex two-level set, including a revolve, designed by the director Stephen Carr, that is employed well. A twelve-piece orchestra, unseen, provide excellent accompaniment.

The sound is good, especially in group numbers, and ensemble work strong - with smooth execution of Michelle Ezzy’s imaginative choreography. Costume design by Angela Ferola has the large cast looking good, with principal cast members dressed as we would expect from the cartoons and films.

David Williams plays Gomez Addams with a great understanding, in a splendid anchoring performance. He is well partnered by Rhianna Patching, who was also a Dance Captain, and certainly knew how to tango. Daughter Wednesday, whose falling in love is catalyst for the plot, was played with verve by Evelyn Tan. Little brother Pugsley was good fun in the hands of Imogen Guppy.

Rufina Mwangura was an energetic Grandma, while Jess Cordier put 110% into the role of Uncle Fester. Peter Scott was a stoic and well-centered Lurch.

Owen Bygott was a great love interest as Lucas, giving boy-next-door charm. Kiara Bentley was lovely as his tightly strung mother Alice, while Will Gorn was excellent as uptight father Mal.

The large crowd of ancestors were focused throughout, always ‘on’ and offering great support throughout.

Another great show from this Performing Arts specialist school and a pleasure to watch.
