Yé-yé Yeah!
Yé-yé Yeah! is a cabaret tribute to the Yé-Yé movement that peaked in France during the 1960s. Written and lead by Sylvia Cornes, it is a “kind of” sequel to her previous show Francois and Friends, but this production features even more performers and a broader look at the musical style.
Lead performer Sylvia, also known by the much more French ‘Sylvie’, has an obvious love, knowledge and enthusiasm for the era, and this, combined with a great singing voice makes for a great evening’s entertainment. Quickly establishing an excellent rapport with the audience, this is a very relaxed but surprisingly slick show.
A sizeable band play well, and bring lots of personality to the show. Great sounds from Mark Turner on saxophone, vocals and flute, Elissa Grubelich on base, Matt Williams on guitar, Nicole Schrek on keyboard and Beau Haines on drums.
Backing singers Michaela Sheehy and Natasha Mitchell (both string singers in their own right) make excellent “yé-yé” girls, adding a lovely 60s look as well as gorgeous support.
Guest artist Glenn Willis, a skilled ventriloquist, appeared with a puppet incarnation of song writer Serge Gainsbourg (some great moments), as well as lending his own beautiful voice to several songs.
A great, relaxing hour, in the friendly atmosphere of the Ellington, where you can also enjoy a drink to two and snacks. A lovely low stress FringeWorld show that will have you searching your Spotify for Yé-Yé music
