The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz
By L. Frank Baum. Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. HAMA Productions. Directed by Olivia Collier. Crown Theatre, Perth. Dec 31 – Jan 22, 2022

The Wizard of Oz might almost be considered a revival of HAMA Productions’ 2019 production at the Regal Theatre, which featured many of the same cast, but this production is bigger, brighter and re-imagined. A huge scale production that delighted the opening night audience at Crown Theatre – this is set to be a holiday treat for old and young alike.

Opening with a beautifully sepia-toned farmhouse set, Bryan Woltjen’s sets are gorgeous and surprising throughout – superbly lit Max Mackenzie with effects that are stunning. Costumes, designed by producer Marina Del Basso are picture-perfect with some great new touches. This show looks and sounds fabulous.

Musical Director Harry Oliff leads a strong 23-piece orchestra, with singing beautiful under the guidance of Harry and Deputy Vocal Director Veronica Bravo. Jake Goodsell’s Sound Design supports the production well.

Amy McCann is a delightful Dorothy, with a lovely combination of innocence and strength and a beautiful voice – a great leading lady.  She is well supported by Coco as Toto, who makes her professional debut, and is simply one of the best stage dogs you will see – love her ability to follow the action.

Rachael Beck gives a gorgeous gentle performance as Glinda the Good Witch. She is expertly matched in a power-house performance by West-End Star Lucy Williamson, a gloriously evil performance as the Wicked Witch – a villain that owns the stage.

Great teamwork from Dorothy’s companions. Bella McSporran is a wonderfully physical Scarecrow with verve and great comic-timing. Ethan Churchill is a sweet and very earnest Tin Man while Vincent Hooper is a very charming and very funny Lion who wins hearts. There are great transitions from their ‘Kansas’ roles with the help of makeup design by Manuao TeAotonga.

In smaller roles, Greg Jarema is a clear audience favourite, stealing scenes and earning exit applause as the Guard of Oz, Mike Nayar is a wonderfully enigmatic Wizard, and Genevieve Newman and Caleb Stevens are lovely as Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Strong cameo performances from Brandon Kaczmarczyk as General Winkie, Jamie Mercanti as Mayor of Munchkin City and Ben Cruse as Nikkos.

A strong ensemble play a variety of roles throughout, including a marvellous group of young performers as Munchkins. They execute Natashia Klarich’s fun choreography with panache and precision with highlights including the snow scene and the Jitterbug.

While this is a long show, it never falters, and audience (and cast) are engaged completely throughout. A very strong production that show-cases the strength of WA production and entertainment for all ages.
