Walk

Walk
By Bobby Russell. The Blue Room Theatre, Perth Cultural Centre, WA. Jul 14-20, 2022

Walk is a highly visceral piece of theatre, featuring a single performer, that merges contemporary choreography with sculpture and design.

The audience enter the world through a corridor of clouds that feels safe, warm and secure before finding themselves in a dark, cavernous, and gleaming world. After the acknowledgement of country, we find ourselves in another world that might be the dreamtime, might be the dawn of time. We join our guide Bobby, shimmering, near naked and battle fatigued as we travel through time and space, through birth and rebirth, leaving ghosts behind, until Bobby realises what it means to be free in their own body and to own and acknowledge their power.

Immersive and designed for the audience to feel the experience, this is a show that I am reluctant to describe in detail, as much is open to interpretation and simply needs to be seen. Performer/creator Bobby Russell has a complete commitment to the journey, drawing the audience into their story and interacting and becoming part of the set and sculpture designed by Opie Robinson. Joe Lui’s colourful symbiotic lighting design is an essential aspect of this production, as is the organic sound design by Peter McAvan that wraps this production.

Lots to think about with this carefully crafted, highly creative production. A great choice for lovers of physical theatre and those who enjoy immersive, diverse theatre.
