#VAL: a glittery ode to queer men and their mums
Australia’s John O’Hara has a strong following Downstairs at the Maj, as this musical theatre performer, shortly to appear in School of Rock, also has quite a penchant for cabaret. His newest show debuted to capacity crowds and a very warm reception for this home-grown favourite.
At first the show is what you would expect from a queer themed cabaret - albeit a very good one. The language is ripe, the comedy is naughty, we are treated to a great diva medley including “Vogue”, “I Will Survive” and “It’s Raining Men”. Later, the show turns a corner and goes to unexpected places, and this is where it truly shines.
While some of the surprises are great fun, including the gorgeous Barbie anthem that asks you to Get Your Sparkle On (and this show is not short of sparkles or Barbie), it is beautiful moments such as the Disney classic “Baby of Mine” and John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice” that allow us to truly experience John’s stunning voice.
While a lovely tribute to John’s own mother Val, the show embraces other mothers, including one of the mothers of the LGBTQI community, Marsha P. Johnson, and a mother forever changed by the Orlando Nightclub shooting.
Accompanied by the charming Andrew Kroenart, this show sounds amazing and is unexpectedly touching.
#VAL is a moving and memorable evening and is sure to have future performances. Well worth catching when you get the chance.
