The Underground
The Underground played an Encore Season as part of Fringe World’s encore weeks - transferring from the tiny Home Economics venue, to the very large Main Hall - and getting great sized audiences too.
The premise of The Underground is a love story set in a very exclusive, invitation only club. It features lots of Latin dance, a huge amount of costumes, some sizzling vocals, a dash of comedy, a spot of audience participation, live percussion, a very impressive guest spot and a lot of heat.
Elysian Creative began as a way to unite dancers during lockdown, and developed into a performance company. Director and choreographer Rafaela Lico leads a strong ensemble of dancers including Mia Simonette, Natalie Oakes, Lisa Drennan, Renee Russo, Caitlyn McKie, Braydon Nicholas and Saolin Naidoo.
Comedian Dave Callan (a strange but fun choice for a Latin themed act) is MC, adding a touch of comedy and running an audience participation, with audience members Bri and Bianca (on the final night) acing their Latin Dance Lesson. Guest artists - young Latin dance couple Flynn Roughsedge and Elina Ismayilova - were a highlight.
Live percussion pushes the underground club feel, with strong drumming and the occasional dance move from Mark McDonald.
The simple set with bent-back chairs and cafe tables is very appropriate and there is excellent use of lighting throughout
The Underground was a great choice for dance-lovers but was also enjoyed by people wanting some late in the evening entertainment that was a little bit different.
