Sweet Charity
I was delighted to be able to catch the final matinee performance of this bright and sassy musical, presented by Wanneroo Repertory Club.
Director David Nelson chose an excellent leading lady in the form of Helen Kerr, who lights up the stage as quirky dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine. Her bright and energetic performance was key to the pace and success of the production.
I loved the performances of Jane Anderson and Mirella Renel as Charity's friends Helene and Nickie. Their energy and complete commitment was tangible and they received good support from the other dance hall girls.
Chorus member Christopher Goudge, Peggy Sawyered into the leading role of Oscar, replacing Helen's husband Wilton Kerr, for the first of two performances, on just a single rehearsal. Word perfect, he gave a charming and convincing performance. Kudos to the animated and keen chorus who presumably were also covering gaps to allow this to happen.
There are many smaller roles in this production. Richard Manganga was dynamic as Daddy Brubeck, Adrian Price (Vittorio Vidal) made a handsome romantic film star, Hayley Currie was every bit the flouncing diva as Ursula and Tim Reissen made his mark with Herman.
The band, under musical director John Macpherson's lead, played well, and sound was excellently balanced by Daniel Towmath and Kim Elford. Dene Jones' lighting design made the most of flamboyant numbers like Rich Man's Frug and The Rhythm of Life.
Costumes were gorgeously bright and this feel carried through the set (especially the wonderful projections), the programme. auditorium and foyer.
A fun, feel-good production and a bright way to end Wanneroo's year.
