Spirit of Christmas
QPAC’s longest running event, Spirit of Christmas returned to the Concert Hall to ring in the Christmas season. Featuring orchestra, choirs and stars of the Australian stage, this two- act concert brings some of the best and most well-known Christmas tunes to life.
Director David Burton did a wonderful job in striking a balance between the formal of a classic Christmas concert with the friendly, casual atmosphere of a local carols event. The result was an entertaining and dynamic show that involved audience participation, glad tidings and even a sprinkling of ‘snow’
Stage design by Bill Haycock further enhanced the Christmas cheer. The decorations adorning the Concert Hall created a cozy Christmas feeling. Garlands hung from the balcony, Christmas trees and a twinkling star.
Lighting design by Ben Hughes was striking. The use of spotlights beaming down from the heavens to illuminate Waveney Yasso in the opening number was profound and moving.
Rachael Beck did a great job as host and emcee. She kept the audience entertained and created a natural and laidback rapport. Her performance of ‘Do You Hear What I Hear’ was soulful and delivered with a reverent stillness.
Beck was joined by Alinta Chidzey, known for her recent performances in Moulin Rouge! and Chicago. Chidzey performed an energetic and unique rendition of O Holy Night which was loved by the audience.
Josh Piterman rounded out the main performers. Another musical theatre star, his performance of ‘The Holy City’ was rousing.
Queensland Conservatorium alumni Nick Smith served one of the special guests of the evening. His performance of ‘Imagine’ showcased his technical and performance skills.
The evening’s performers were completed by Waveney Yasso. Yasso also delivered the Christmas message, a special moment of the evening. Yasso’s performance of ‘Silent Night’ with the Voices of Birralee was a touching moment.
The performers were accompanied by a combination of musicians from both the Queensland Symphony and Youth Orchestras, conducted by Simon Kenway. The evening’s line up was completed by the Spirit of Christmas Choir and the Voices of Birralee who both did a wonderful job accompanying the performers, delivering a rousing sound that filled the cavernous Concert Hall
A special treat of the evening was hearing QPAC’s spectacular organ, skillfully played by Emma Hadfield.
Overall, Spirit of Christmas delivered a wonderful evening of talented performers bringing to life classic Christmas tunes in dynamic and stirring performances perfect to ring in the Christmas period.
