The Sound Of Nazis
On the 50th Anniversary of Julie Andrews running across an Austrian hill top it is perhaps appropriate to review a slightly different version of the Von Trapp story.
The Sound of Nazis is more your Mel Brooks meets Monty Python take – a bolshy South African Mother Superior and her nuns (with beards) throw out the annoyingly nice, but unfortunately coifed, Maria. She goes to work for the captain to look after his seven children and has to deal with the rampant hormones of a teenage Friedrich and the loopy behavior of Leisl. Throw in a megalomanic Nazi Leader, a rapping telegram boy, and X rated puppet show and a Hill (alive with the sound of music…) and you have a recipe for an off the wall performance.
At times the accents got a bit thick and the dialogue became a bit shouty which meant some of the witty dialogue was missed but hopefully this was just opening night nerves. Overall this slightly manic performance was funny and entertaining – everything you want from a show in a comedy festival!
