Some Like It Marilyn

Some Like It Marilyn
Lexi Sekuless Productions. The Mill Theatre Company, Canberra. August 7 – 24, 2024

This is not a straightforward biography of Marilyn Monroe’s life, but rather a show based around documents and artefacts related to Marilyn. We see her starry show business moments, her interviews showing her quick wit and easy charm, and how others viewed her. In all, it is a wonderful evening to remember what a star the actress was, and how very human she was as well.

This sparkling celebration of the many facets of Marilyn’s life starts with Two Little Girls from Little Rock, with Lexi Sekuless as Marilyn and Helen McFarlane as Jane Russell. Their duet sets the tone for the show. There’s no stinting on sequins or satin, with marvellous costumes created by Tania Jobson. The actors reach every person in the audience with their characterisations and Mark Lee and Timmy Sekuless play a variety of characters, and show depth and humour.

The set design by Sam Thomas is a simple but very effective use of space, complete with a grate to show the iconic shot of Marilyn’s skirt in The Seven Year Itch. Scenes quickly move from one to another, with mood and location created by an excellent sound and lighting design. The music, directed by Leisa Keen, is always right for the moment and brings the audience from one scene to another and the choreography by Annette Sharpe is varied and always on point.

In short, this is definitely a show to see, whether you are interested in Marilyn Monroe, or you appreciate well-tuned theatrical works that show the talent that is in Canberra.
