The Six Guys an Immigrant Trans Person of Colour will date in Melbourne
The annual Midsumma Festival never ceases to amaze audiences with a smorgasbord of colourful shows. And this new show written and performed by Dax Carnay and direction by Beng Oh is no exception; a zesty animated fractured romantic comedy about life as an immigrant trans person of colour.
Dax Carnay is “D” - her alter ego is a newly arrived immigrant from Manilla looking for love, and a place she can call home. D is vocal, in your face and wants us all to know that life has been tough living in Manilla and was not an easy place to dwell as a “fat trans person” and feels she would have a better chance of survival in Melbourne.
Carnay offers a superb cabaret inspired performance - scans the audience - sexy and raunchy - out for a good time, catching the 109 Box Hill tram into the big smoke, lands in a Collins Street niteclub. She meets J (Omar Dabash) along the way, her chivalrous mate who offers her a shoulder to lean on.
Love does find her - rejected, accepted, and rejected again after a string of manipulative lovers, intermittently performed by the fabulous Sebastiano Pitruzzello - only to by consoled by J repeatedly. Lessons must be learned and or playing the field can hurt one’s soul. D learns the hard way (no pun intended) and begins to trust J and believe in friendship.
D is a wonderful character, full of life, often hilarious, jibing in her own native tongue, while wearing her heart on her sleeve and always up for a sexy-badass rollicking good time. The set and costume designs (Christina Logan- Bell) are spectacular with brooding pink silhouettes and gorgeous, funky, and graphic costumes. Along with projection of quotes from all our favourite rom-coms, by Video and Graphic Designer Jordan Hanrahan. Ambient and striking lighting design by Clare Springett accompanied with an eclectic sound design by Ben Keene.
