The Simple Gift

The Simple Gift
By Andre Victor adapted from the novel by Steven Herrick. Fringe World. Directed by Andre Victor. Hayman Theatre, Curtin University, Bentley, WA. Jan 28 - Feb 2, 2025

The Simple Gift had its World Premiere as part of Roleystone Theatre’s One Act Season in 2024. At the time I described it as one of the best short plays of the year. Now produced by director Andre Victor, it returns with the same cast, for a short season, as part of Fringe World.

Sensitively adapted from Steven Herrick’s Young Adult novel, about teenage runaway Billy and his experiences in a small country town, his relationship with fellow hobo, Old Bill and an emerging romance with local girl Caitlin.

The Simple Gift swept its category at the recent Finley Awards, winning Best One Act Play, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best New Writing. The show is perhaps even better than it was then, with some fine tuning and greater depth of character.

Harry McGuire, a little soft in the opening minutes of Opening Night, quickly found his feet, excellent in his portrayal of this abused young man who finds himself - a beautiful, relaxed performance. Caitlyn Boyle is lovely as Caitlin, introspective and mature. Benjamin Small plays several roles, making them clear and distinct and shining as Old Bill, in a raw, emotive performance.

Thoughtfully directed, a lack of set and minimal costuming allows the performances to shine.

Don’t miss your chance to see this excellent little production. The Simple Gift deserves its hype and awards.
