Yummy

Fringe World. Directed by James Welsby. De Parel Spiegeltent, The Pleasure Garden, Northbridge, WA Jan 27 - Feb 3, 2018

Yummy is a gorgeously glamorous late night mash up of drag, comedy, dance and cirque; a cabaret with lots of boobs, butts and bellies that blasts into action and entertains at every moment.

Murder Mystery History

Fringe World. Directed by Christie Strauss. An Sibin Irish Pub and surrounding area, WA. Jan 29 - Feb 6, 2018

Murder Mystery History is part local tour, part history lesson, a little bit of a ghost hunt, has some great tales of murder and features fabulous storytelling from a talented actress.

Christie Strauss leads a group through Northbridge and the Perth Cultural Centre, telling tales of crimes and killing. An excellent and expertly researched raconteur, Christie’s theatrically delivered stories had the audience enthralled by the murder, mayhem and mystery that occurred in supposably sleepy Perth. This is site specific theatre as well as a tour.

Cull

The Very Good Looking Initiative. Fringe World. The Blue Room, Northbridge, WA. 27 Jan - 3 Feb, 2018

Honor and Patrick decide to cull their Facebook friends. In the process the audience are taken through a wild 70 minutes of the worst excesses of social media, in what would have to be the most energetic performances in town.

The Very Good Looking Initiative present this fascinating and cleverly crafted show. While the story is great, and the performances excellent, the best part of this show is the extreme energy and enthusiasm of performers Patrick Durnan Silva and Honor Wolff, who get barely a second’s rest in this high powered show.

Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical

Fringe World. The Gold Digger at Fringe Central, Perth WA. Jan 27 - Feb 4, 2018

If you have ever wanted to see Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical, but have been unable to get a ticket, this year may be your chance. This very popular Fringe World show is playing at The Gold Digger, a great venue, with stadium seating, which means you are close to the action, with a great view.

Impromptunes - The Bachela-la-la

Fringe World. Directed by Emmet Nichols. Teatro -The Pleasure Garden, Russell Square, Northbridge, WA. Jan 27-Feb 3, 2018

The sexier sister to Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical, The Bachela-la-la is a naughty late night improvised musical based on The Bachelor/The Bachelorette franchise. Aimed at adults, the audience are kept laughing from the time we meet the contestants until the moment that a ring is placed on the winner’s finger.

Play Time

Back Door Productions. Fringe World (WA). The Black Flamingo, The Pleasure Garden, Russell Square, Northbridge, WA. Jan 27 -31, 2018

Play Time is what may happen if children’s television was made for young adults. We join Adam, Kate, Liv and Jake as they learn important things that young adults should know.

Fun and colourfull, it uses a Playschool-like format to teach adult skills to the characters and audience.

SUGAR

Paper Haus Theatre Co. Fringe World (WA). The Black Flamingo at the Pleasure Garden, Russell Square, Northbridge. Jan 27 - Feb 4, 2018

SUGAR is a very pink, very sweet, celebration of a performance, which beneath its sugary surface deals with important issues of anxiety, self esteem and the pressures faced by young women.

Central character Sugar (a picture perfect and delightful Claire Thomas), is feeling rejected, anxious and alone after a really disastrous party. She turns to the internet for help and finds “The Fixits”, a latter-day Spice Girls on steroids, who promise that they can fix any problem.

Completely Improvised Potter

Soothplayers. Fringe World. The Palace Society at Ibis Palace, Ibis Hotel, Perth. Jan 27 - Feb 4, 2018

Completely Improvised Potter promises what every Potter fan desperately craves - another year at Hogwarts with a new book that has never really existed.

Melbourne based improvisation company, Soothplayers, who are also presenting Completely Improvised Shakespeare at Fringe World, ask patrons to write down the name of the Harry Potter book that they have always wanted. These are placed into a large Goblet (of not much fire), and a selection is drawn.

The Obscure Tour

Pedroland. The Navy Club, Fremantle WA and surrounding area. Jan 27 - Feb 15, 2018

A few years ago I was discussing the television show Amazing Race in theatrical company, and it was noted that the Amazing Race was extremely popular amongst “theatre people”. Various theories were tossed around as to the reason for the correlation. Based on that discussion, I might suggest that readers of Stage Whispers are very likely to love The Obscure Tour.

Dragged

Written & Produced by Andy Aisbett. For midsumma festival. La Mama Courthouse, Carlton VIC. 25 January to 4 February 2017

‘Stella’ (Samuel Thompson) is a drag artist – gorgeous, sexy but dissolute, unreliable and self-pitying.  She’s taking a break and a half bottle of Scotch between sets at a drag show venue, and thinking back over her past.  How did she get here?  She remains on stage throughout, mostly in postures of abject defeat, as we go back into that past: so she’s a framing device and occasional Narrator.
