Shark

Shark
By Lucy Wong. Lazy Yarns. Directed by Mitchell Whelan. The Blue Room Theatre, Perth Cultural Centre, WA. Feb 11-15, 2025

Presented by Lazy Yarns, Shark is a behind the scenes look at a low budget Sharkageddon film, where the young actress at the centre of the story and the ‘Shark’ both dream of stardom.

Campy, schlocky and most certainly not taking itself seriously, Shark was written by actor Lucy Wong, in collaboration with fellow actor/designer/devisors Clea Purvis (who plays Girl) and Delaney Burke (Shark).

Happily engaging in genre breaking, this oddball little show includes a dance number, deliberately gratuitous bikinis and boobs and live video as the film’s director (one of Lucy Wong’s several roles) attempts to make the film with a missing lead actor and a Shark with an attitude problem.

More blood than Evil Dead, and some dead bodies thrown about, this is high energy silliness that quietly makes some points about the disposability of actresses, and has some feminist leanings, but is ultimately there for the laughs.

Fabulous camaraderie between the three performers who commit to their roles despite the implausible storylines and sometimes unlikely characters.

Well performed silliness that left the audience smiling.
