Secret Bridesmaids’ Business.
Roxy Lane kicked off their 2024 Season with popular Australian comedy, Elizabeth Coleman’s Secret Bridesmaids’ Business. One of Roxy Lane’s best productions to date, the final performance was well received by a very enthusiastic audience.
Set in a hotel room on the eve of Meg’s wedding, Meg, her mother and her bridesmaids spend the evening preparing for the wedding, spoiled somewhat by the knowledge of some that France James may be having an affair.
The modest hotel room is nicely created by Jim Chantry, with solid lighting and sound by Kieran Smith and Katherine Robertson. Costumes are well chosen especially Meg’s stunning wedding gown.
Jade Glitch makes a promising directorial debut, especially considering she faced the challenge of playing adversarial character Naomi and a housemaid.
Peri Watson is lovely as bride-to-be Meg, hitting her strides in the more emotional scenes and convincing throughout.
The titular bridesmaids are both excellent - and a lovely contrast with each other. Michaela Davis plays her first role in Perth and has considerable depth as more conservative childhood friend Angela, while Rhiannon Dick makes a strong community theatre debut as outspoken and outgoing Lucy.
Another stage debut was made by Geraldine Harris, playing mum Colleen with confidence, while Craig Lamont played the philandering fiancée James - genuinely sweating under pressure.
Director Jade completed the cast with a nicely acted performance, but her character Naomi should really be a physical match for Lucy - and although some lines were added to try and cover this disparity, it did leave a slight plot problem.
Well done to this team for a fresh and very watchable production.
