Rose and Walsh
Stirling Players’ Rose and Walsh is a tender, gentle comedy about the relationship between award winning writer Rose, and her departed partner Walsh McLaren, who appears in her mind.
Rose Steiner’s beach house in Montauk, Long Island, is gorgeously created on Stirling Theatre’s stage, in a design by Tom Brandwood. Expertly built, the design is particularly attractive, and decor features well-chosen art, including three striking original paintings by artist Doug McLean. Beautifully lit by John Woolrych, the sky and seascapes at the rear of the stage, created by lighting, are particularly striking.
The small cast of four work well as an ensemble. Strong performances from Gwen Browning and Gordon Park in the title roles, both convincing as intelligent characters with a long-term relationship. Both show interesting development throughout the play.
Relative newcomer Amanda Bird plays Rose’s friend and companion Arlene Moss, and plays her character’s interesting revelations believably. Benedict Chau completes the cast well as a ghost writer brought in to finish Walsh’s last novel - he creates an intriguing and believable character.
A bitter-sweet little comedy that is gently paced and heart-warming. A lovely way to end Stirling Players’ 2022 season.
