Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages is playing to packed, very enthusiastic houses at Koorliny Arts Centre with a energetic, enthusiastic cast, who rock out with abandon.
The strong Rock of Ages band - Christian Ingram, Vlad Sturdy, Jonathan Curren, Luke Casserly and MD Kate McIntosh, are given pride of place on the set designed by director Stephen Carr and Peter “Pear” Carr. The set also features eighties icons, a hidden revolve, multi levels and a pole - well employed by talented ensemblist Shona Shultz. Costume design by Kiri Silva and Evangalyn Little captures the era and has clever touches.
This nostalgic but highly energised show is narrated by unlikely hero and dramatic conduit Lonny, played larger than life by Tim How. The romantic leads are played by new-to-Perth Katie Elizabeth Williams and Matthew Arnold, who are believable and likeable. Gareth Jay is strong as club owner Dennis, and Tate Bennett brings a lot of fun in a great portrayal of deplorable Stacee Jaxx.
Georgia McGivern is a stand-out as passionate Regina, beautifully matched with the very charming Max Gipson as Franz. Bad guy Hertz is well portrayed by Grant O’Neil. Rachel Monamy shines as strip club manager “Mama” Justice. Special mention must be made of Ruth Bennett’s excellent Waitress Number One.
A fifteen member ensemble maintain their focus throughout, singing with gusto and executing Allen Blachford and Claire Ball-Matthews choreography with fervour.
Musical theatre traditionalists may lament the lack of choreographic precision, and there are some bum notes here and there, but this is a tough sing. The audience don’t seem to notice and love the familiarity of the eighties hits and the atmosphere is great.
A great night out for lovers of rock, fans of the eighties and those who love their theatre immersive and intense. Book your tickets immediately, as they will completely sell out.
