The Quadrangle

The Quadrangle
By Kids in Perth. Whiskey and Boots and Barking Gecko Arts. State of Play for FringeWorld. Rehearsal Room 1, State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. Jan 23-Feb 1, 2025

This unique verbatim theatre piece features the opinions and beliefs of Perth children and teenagers, elicited in interviews with the performers, actors wearing headphones deliver the answers to the interviews exactly as they hear them.

Presented by Whiskey and Boots and Barking Gecko Arts as part of State of Play for FringeWorld, this show feels intimate and cosy. The production features a playground set, where the actors and musicians perform in front of a screen that features the questions being asked.

Performers Mark Soren and Georgia King, wearing headphones, deliver the young people’s answers exactly as they hear them. Using the original inflections, corrections and styling. The world view revealed varies from the very funny, to sad and poignant as the young people talk about their fears, concerns and what it is like living in Perth - a bit of a roller-coaster of emotions, both actors are very expressive of face, and beautifully recreate the nuance of what they are repeating.

The background includes some thoughtful and beautiful artwork from students at Mt Lawley Senior High School, with the whole piece segmented with original songs by Bridget Turner (who is also one of the two live accompanists) inspired by each set of interviews.

Well attended by an audience of mixed ages, including many in the age group interviewed, this would be a great show for inspiring post show discussions. A very different and moving piece of theatre.
