Popera: Sex, Death & Politics
Pop meets opera meets sex, death and politics in a game show hosted by the fabulous Diva soprano and performer Uma Dobia. Uma Dobia and Bronny Lane (director and producer of Little Train Creative) have developed and written a unique burlesque comedy cabaret show, that will bedazzle you and enlighten your aesthetic sensibilities.
Uma Dobia is a raunchy hot she-devil pouncing around the stage in her red lurex leotard and sparkly silver boots ready to ‘get physical’ and woo her audience.
She exudes charisma, loads of charm and plenty of ‘cunt’, a real live wire, and an uncompromising Diva, yet when her darling assistant Trevor (Lloyd Lohse) dumps her live on video link, Uma Dobia has a ‘damsel in distress’ meltdown, but no knight in shining armour will save her except the sound of clanging cymbals from her quirky and playful female keyboard player Alex Byrne, setting Dobia off into a pop rap operatic song that feels like a clever reconstruction of ‘Rapture’ by Blondie).
A volatile game show with a difference, interactive and unpredictable with audience members ready to partake and be part of the mayhem. Popera: Sex, Death & Politic is a farcical exposition of some of the best grand operas ever written. As eccentric as Mozart and as bombastic as a Puccini. It takes us on a modern ride into the past and back to the present. All songs are original and written by Dobia and Lane, except CMFK which is written by Dobia. Popera may be a quiz show about pop and opera and modern Divas from Maria Callas to Madonna, Beyonce, Mariah Carey to name just a few; it is also about entertaining and that it does on a grand scale in sound and music. Mozart would certainly be giggling with whimsical enthusiasm.
Despite Dobia’s love of opera, she openly denounces the submissive and tragic female stereotypes in all the grand old classics from Carmen and Turandot to Don Giovanni, and the list goes on. She is about female empowerment in the unrelenting era of the MeToo campaign.
This show is a must see!
