Picnic at Hanging Rock

Picnic at Hanging Rock
By Joan Lindsay adapted by Tom Wright. Directed by Kathleen Del Casale. Old Mill Theatre, South Perth. WA. Nov 29- Dec 14, 2024

Old Mill Theatre presented the Tom Wright adaptation of Picnic at Hanging Rock, in a well-received three-week season. A small cast version, featuring five actresses playing dozens of roles, it was well received with healthy sized audiences.

A visually striking production, the set consisted of a cave like rock formation, designed and constructed by Bradley Vogels, Kathleen Del Casale, Barry Gordon, Julie Gordon and George Boyd. The rock is given multiple looks, via a stunning lighting design by Virginia Moore-Price. Costumes are an interesting albeit eclectic blend of 1900s and contemporary looks.

The five performers work well, as an ensemble and ably switch from character to character with the help of simple costuming, also executing synchronised movement well.

Genevieve Newman is a standout, playing the harridan-like Mrs Appleyard (and other roles) with sympathy, skill and strength. Georgie Jackson brings a quiet sophistication and vulnerability to the role of Irma, and Ella McGuire is lovely as the fragile but determined Sara. The cast is nicely completed by Belle Toy, making a welcome return to the stage and Emilia Lawonski.

While at times the pace wasn’t quite as sleek as it should be, it was clear that this was a project of passion and that there was an affinity with the story.

A worthy way to end Old Mill’s theatrical year.
