Passing Strange
Passing Strange is a semi-fictionalised musical account of the real-life story of American singer-songwriter and author Mark ‘Stew’ Stewart. This incredibly delightful production combines powerful music and performance to tell a moving story of self-discovery. The story is set across a variety of locations including Los Angeles, Paris and Berlin and charts the process of the central character’s journey to finding his musical sound. The approach is light-hearted and captures a subtle tone of irony and which emphasises a cheerful and fun-loving mood.
The show places the band and the performers front and centre and makes the performance a true combination of both music and theatre. The two work in incredible harmony and synergy. The songs and narration advance the story and the performers provide vignette-like sequences which detail the compelling drama of this very personal journey.
Augustin Tchantcho as Narrator is a phenomenal powerhouse. His presence on stage is commanding and he sets a dynamic tone which is mirrored in the vibrant and energetic cast: Youth (Grant Young), Mother (Sasha Hennequin), Ensemble (Zahrah Andrews, Tier Ataing, Gabriela van Wyk & Theo Williams), Swings (Guillaume Gentil & Asha Khamis).
The band features Marissa Saroca (Keys), Chelsea Allen (Drums), Will Gijsbers (Guitar), and Christopher Michigan (Bass). The wonderfully soulful and energetic music is woven into the action, perfectly echoing many of the emotions portrayed by the performers. The vocals harmony is also exceptional, and this reinforces the strong emotional impact of the show.
The entire show has an extremely polished look with great cohesion in the colour scheme of the costuming, combined with very stylish choreographed movement and mime. Yet the show is also able to convey a very relaxed and authentic atmosphere which further adds to its power. This performance exudes elegance and flair and provides sheer foot stomping enjoyment. Don’t miss it!
