The Party
Strap yourself in, because you are about to attend the party of the century and the first rule is…there are no rules. Nothing is off-limits in this risqué comedy circus cabaret. Founding director of Strut & Fret and director of this latest extravaganza Scott Maidment has assembled an incredibly talented and versatile cast; along with comedy direction by Spencer Novich and choreography by Kevin Maher they have produced a high-octane two hours of adult fun.
From the moment you enter the resplendent spiegeltent, the tunes are echoing loudly. The night I attended was sold-out and the audience had come to party, given some were dancing before the performance even started.
A high-energy soundtrack full of catchy tunes and lip-synced dialogue wonderfully portrayed by flamboyant characters is the heartbeat of this show. Guests pile in, each more outrageous than the last, with a party host doing his best to contain the chaos, but he too gives himself over to the sexual overtones and the adoring gaze of one of his guests.
I was swept up by the vigorous and lusty choreography. This cast did not miss a beat; their animated performances were intoxicating. Circus feats, acrobatics and a talking toilet added to the mayhem with hilarious results. The sexy antics and slapstick comedy continued into act two, with party guests hooking up and letting it all hang out…literally. Dazzling lighting and a flashy set added to this already visually exciting production.
Not for the prudish, this show is a wild ride from beginning to end.
