Papillon
This show had a lot of hype to live up to and I am happy to say that it exceeded all expectations. A distinctive vaudeville vibe was created by a house-band, rich costumes and an eclectic lighting display. What sets this show apart from many in the same genre is the pair of hosts who know how to work a crowd. Full of naughty but nice banter, this duo had chemistry and were the glue that held the performance together.
Incredible talent was on display. A vocalist who opened with a saucy jazz number was sublime and set the stage for some incredibly talented and agile acts. Balancing with ladders and several chairs, aerial acrobatics on rope and swing were meticulously executed. A troupe that was not afraid to play up to the sold-out crowd provided half-naked, saucy performances.
It was a mixture of circus, cabaret and physical theatre. Juggling of knives and a chainsaw left the front row cringing with fear and walking on upright champagne bottles evoked big responses from the audience. Witnessing a woman walk along big shards of broken glass took my breath away. It was hard not to wonder how you begin to rehearse such an act.
This show promises to deliver something for everyone and they do. I am happy to say that there is still plenty of time to witness this fast-paced hour of comedy, cabaret and circus.
