Nunsense
Primadonna Productions’ (essentially) all female production of Nunsense included two performances on International Women’s Day during its three-day season. Playing to packed houses, audiences were treated to a fun musical showcasing some great female talent.
Nunsense’s conceit is that we are watching a fundraising concert to raise the money to bury the last three sisters yet to be buried after a mass food poisoning incident. Played on the set of the 8th Grade production of Grease (nicely created by Lori Anders) a handful of sisters delight us with their talents.
At the helm is Reverend Mother Sister Mary Regina, played with power by Karen Godfrey, singing up a storm. Director Carole Dhu pulls double duty as Mistress of Novices, Sister Hubert, in a lovable performance. Gemma White is sweet as Sister Mary Amnesia, beautifully vague as the nun who has forgotten who she is. Sian Wake brings plenty of character to tough talking Sister Robert Ann, from the wrong side of town, while Bella Lambert is adorable as novice, Sister Mary Leo, who aims to be the first Nun Ballerina.
Helping out in cameo appearances are choreographer Christine Greg, as Sister Mary Grace, and Michael Rogers as Father Michael, on stage support, extra dance help and crew - all in character.
While this almost “pop-up” production is very simply staged, the religious costumes and accoutrements are all well-chosen and effective, while sound from Angela Edwards and lighting by Jodie Bonner are very nicely done.
A production that wasn’t trying to change the world but was very entertaining and expertly delivered. A pleasure to watch.
