Not A Boring Life

Not A Boring Life
By Yvette Wall. FringeWorld. Directed by Karin Staflund. Cambridge Bowling Club. Floreat WA. Jan 23-Feb 1, 2025

One of the most frequent reasons I hear for people not wanting to attend FringeWorld, is a reluctance to venture into the Fringe hubs of Perth and Northbridge, to battle with crowds and parking. Not A Boring Life is the answer. Playing in the comfort of Cambridge Bowling Club in Floreat, with a bar, and a specially curated drinks menu, this is a classy and relaxed way to Fringe.

Not A Boring Life made its World Premiere for Playlovers in 2024. This version, presented by Off the Wall Productions, is a new production with a revised script, new director and new cast, except for the delightful Kerry Goode, who received a Finley nomination and Adjudicators Certificate for this role. Kerry reprises her role as the dotty yet mysterious Mrs Partridge.

The show tells of three friends visiting the home of their deceased book-club friend after her sudden passing. As they clean up and talk about the departed Quinn, they realise that they did not know her as well as they thought they did, and in the process their own lives become a lot more complex.

Writer/Producer Yvette Wall steps confidently into the role of Charles, no nonsense and outspoken. Fiona Forster is a delight as organised and efficient Marion, while Colleen Bradford is lovely as reluctant to take risks Susan, who comes out of her shell. Kerry Goode once again steals scenes with her late in the show arrival.

Well directed and performed. This great quality show is edgy enough to have a FringeWorld feel but is still a great choice to take conservative Aunt Gladys along to and elicit some giggles. Well worth a look.
