No Former Performer…Has Performed this Performance
By Born in a Taxi, La Mama, EXPLORATIONS, 205 Faraday Street, Carlton. October 28, 29 & 30, 2015.

As the title suggests, the performance is unique and has never been performed on stage before. Born in a Taxi combines dance, movement, props, text and gesture with sound, music and lighting in a wonderfully humorous and quirky manner. The emphasis is on the body and its infinite possibilities of expression. The result is pure poetry.

Penny Baron makes an entrance that gives new meaning to acrobatics. Her body transitions from graceful to abstract in the matter of seconds and, combined with her extraordinary facial expressions, she pushes the boundaries of known emotions. It is hard to imagine another performer with a body so pliable and eccentric. Yet Carolyn Hanna proves to be her kindred spirit. The two redefine the idea of ‘hanging from the rafters’ or ‘bouncing off the walls’.

Physical theatre has enjoyed enormous popularity creating new and energetic stage dynamics. Born in a Taxi provides a very original interpretation of this new theatrical approach with the ability to also create an incredibly stylish and visually stunning performance. It marries physical theatre with performance art and studies movement with intensity. Sound artist, Michael Havir, provides a sound and musical accompaniment that complements and speaks to the actions of the performers and it becomes abundantly clear that the experience is designed to be unique to the space, the audience and the moment. This is an art form not to be missed.
