Neel Kolhatkar
At only 22, Sydney comedian Neel Kolhatkar has plenty of comic experience. He interacts with the audience with confidence and ease, with hilarious results. Poking fun at our differences without offending can be a fine line, but he does it with ease and likeability. Not afraid to laugh at his own Indian heritage and make comedy gold out of stereotypes, he has the audience in stitches within moments of stepping on the stage.
Tackling current affairs, politics, relationships, sex and reality television means he is never short of material. A master of accents, he can relate stories with authenticity. Not afraid to elicit laughs from our multi-cultural nation, he makes a point of saying that we are too easily offended. His self-deprecating humour backs up this sentiment.
Kolhatkar came to the public’s attention through his You Tube channel and his popularity rapidly grew, but do not call him a sensation; as he explains in his show, being a celebrity in Australia is like being the smartest kid in Elizabeth.
For a solid hour, I laughed as Kolhatkar retold tales of social interactions and observations. He is one Australian comedian we’re likely to be hearing about for years to come.
