Minky Opens a Gallery
The ingredients in this one hour play include a large dose of celebrity, several ounces of social media, a healthy portion of satire directed at the art world and a good sprinkle of comedy. Freshly baked and out of the oven for the first time the results are delicious.
The play opens with a succession of paparazzi photos of Minky Westin (Jodine Holli Wolman), looking glamorous, awkwardly leaving various cars or parties and finally arriving on stage worse for wear from a big night out.
We hear that she has been scarred by a recent public scandal. Not a sex tape AKA Paris Hilton, rather a puppy mishap. Minky released a handbag to carry around pet dogs, but due to a malfunction the pooch of a celebrity tragically expired.
We see an intriguing row of paintings facing away from the audience. Minky Westin has been given an ultimatum by her very rich father to finally make something of her life and she resolves to do this by setting up an art gallery.
Unfortunately, whilst Minky was above average at Art in school she is rather thin on knowledge on how to run a gallery. The writer Joanna Weinberg said she was intrigued by the idea that someone could succeed in such a rarefied world using only their wits.
Together Joanna and Jodine prowled local art locales observing and documenting local characters.
With such an impressive preparation it is no wonder that Jodine absolutely carved up the role, impressing the full house as she swivelled sharply between the characters.
The satire was ever present on the canvas as the artwork from Brigette Thorn was finally revealed to the audience.
What would you pay for a painting made from weaved pubic hair? A mock auction drew a handsome sum at our performance.
The artwork and play deserve another exhibition.
