Merry Mixology: A Boozy Christmas Cabaret

Merry Mixology: A Boozy Christmas Cabaret
Presented by Outside the Jukebox. Mix Bar, Woolloongabba, Brisbane. 10-22 December, 2023

Mixology is a term used to describe the art of mixing drinks, and the full title of the show pretty much sums up this wacky somewhat eccentric night of 'booze, men/women/whatever and song' whilst using an iconic historical building, previously the local post-office renovated into a bar, as the stage. Cast members Hayden Rodgers (dressed in drag), Marcia Penman (additionally the musical director), Oliver Samson and Hannah Grondin are also the creative team behind the show and together they have devised a concept with the idea of blending specific cocktails with four separate vintage television live performances, each with their own compere, whilst adding more than a dash of the spirit of Christmas to each episode to create a night of fun and frivolity in true festive season mode. The bar has literally been transformed into a cabaret theatre as such so the setting is relaxed and the bar staff always poised to show-off their mixology talents and provide whatever kind of drink tickles you, or your epiglottis, pink.

Accompanied by a jazz trio, these four gifted and versatile vocalists and performers have concocted a unique comedic bash with a difference which includes some clever and inventive script-writing, in particular the take on the famous carol 'Twelve Days of Christmas' where each segment, with variations, is coupled with an alternative interpretative script in zany English style. Other highlights include the most entertaining human puppet version of the Christmas nativity scene and the hilarious German take-off of 'Silent Night'.

But perhaps the most impressive aspect of the evening is hearing the vocal talents of the cast. With their own arrangements and blend of harmonies, mostly there, the bar was soon filled with sonorous sound in true theatrical style, adding more than a few extra bubbles to the drinks of the captivated audience. Many of the solos well-indicate the talent and experience of the cast and are quite riveting: in particular Oliver Samson's interpretation of 'Mrs Santa Claus', in general with his remarkable range and versatility of tone and style as with charismatic Marcia Penman's vocal talents, characterization and use of graceful movement.

Cabaret is a concept that has been around for a very long time and is a great alternative to mainstream theatre, what with its audience immersion, quality satire in a more intimate environment, and of course a bar. It's unfortunate that the choice of venue in this instance, despite its 'olde worlde' charm, doesn't match the ingredients and quality of the show which would work decidedly better with more space, a mini-stage and colourful lighting, even a spotlight. However, with such a strong versatile cast and inventive comedic script, plus perhaps those few additional 'flavours' to a cocktail or three, this is perhaps something one might overlook ......
