The Magic Kazoo
The Magic Kazoo is the latest in a series of operas adapted and produced by Freeze Frame Opera for Primary School students. Whereas previous shows have adapted familiar stories or used opera music to shape known stories, The Magic Kazoo aims to capture the elements that make The Magic Flute enchanting, while creating a short opera story that appeals to young audiences.
Designed for easy travel from school to school, playing in venues without dedicated performance spaces, The Magic Kazoo slid nicely into the lovely little hall in the Dalkeith Road School of Music, for a brief public season, enchanting children and adults alike. Rhiannon Walker’s set design is simple and practical but effective, with sweet, surprising costuming.
Mozart’s gorgeous score now accompanies the story of Tamino and Pamina, now school kids about to start a new term. Tamino is reluctant to wake up, much to his mother’s frustration, while Pamina is worried about starting a new school and having no friends. Other characters, including half man half bird Papageno, are the children’s bed toys come to life.
Relatable problems, with which the kids can identify, and some audience interaction and involvement keep the young audience engaged.
The cast of four are excellent. Prudence Sanders sings with brilliance while playing both children’s mothers and Queen of the Night. Keaton Straszewski-Hose embraces his inner child as schoolboy Tamino, with Charis Postmus sweet and believable as his neighbour Pamina. James Pinneri works most closely with the audience as the quirky Papageno.
The show is accompanied by pianist extraordinaire (and Musical Director) Tommaso Pollio.
A great introduction to opera for Primary Aged People, that hopefully will be the start of a lifetime enjoyment of this art.
