Madwomen Monologues
Madwomen Monologues is back for another season of scintillating new short plays by local women writers. Launched in 2011 by the creative team at Baggage Productions, the growing support and submissions they receive each year have been astonishing. One act plays with one-act performers makes this annual event unique and compelling. They are currently running two programs of six plays at The Butterfly Club.
Program One will be running until the 16th of November, followed by Program Two from November 18- 23. I had the opportunity to watch the first installment and was impressed with the overall talent of writers, actors and directors.
The beauty of short plays is, if they are good they will be thematically succinct and rich in detail. In Good O by Kate Rotherham, a daughter loses her elderly father to cancer. Kathy Lepan–Walker delivers a convincing performance of a grief stricken woman who deals with people’s misjudgments while juggling motherhood and a dying parent.
In An Interview Ain’t No Sure Thing by Phoebe Taylor, Seon Williams plays an anxiety ridden person going for a job interview. Impeccable comical timing rings bells for Williams, who is flawless in her all encompassing self-reflective banter as interviewee.
The Cosmonauts’s Child by Alison Knight, performed by Andrew Godson, is a metaphorical exploration of being a first time parent. A cosmonaut launches himself into space while anticipating the birth of his “first” child, in the wake of losing his first.
Butterfly Kicks by Jamila Main is a quaint piece about a girl’s first big night out at a New Eve’s Party. It explores the trials and tribulations of breaking out into the adult world. Liliana Dalton is an exuberantly impressionistic actor, offers an energetic performance
